Aizawl: The Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) will likely make a decision on Monday regarding Chief Minister Lalduhoma’s alleged breach of the election model code of conduct, ahead of the February 12 village council elections.

A senior election official confirmed that the matter would be addressed shortly.

State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana stated that Lalduhoma submitted his explanation on Friday.

The complaint, lodged by the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), accuses the chief minister of violating the model code during his interaction with leaders of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) from the Tuirial West Block in Kolasib.

“The Kolasib district election officer has submitted a detailed report on the incident, as it occurred in the border district,” Lalthlangliana said.

The complaint, filed by MNF General Secretary J. Rosangpuia on February 6, alleges that Lalduhoma announced new government policies during the meeting.

It also claims that a photograph of the meeting, which was reportedly circulated from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), further violated the election code of conduct.

This is not the first time an election-related violation has come to light.

Earlier, Public Works Department Minister Vanlalhlana was pardoned by the SEC after he issued an apology for a similar breach.

The village council elections, scheduled for February 12, will cover 544 councils across nine districts, excluding the three autonomous district councils in Siaha and Lawngtlai, as well as 111 local councils under the Aizawl and Lunglei Municipal Corporations.

A total of 6,829 candidates are contesting for the village council seats, while 2,076 candidates are vying for local council positions.

The counting of votes will begin at 7 pm or immediately after polling concludes.
