Shillong: His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Fr. Bernard Laloo, the Chancellor and Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Laitumkhrah as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Shillong.
Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh informed on Saturday that Rev Leopoldo Girelli, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, has communicated to him about the appointment made by Pope Francis and announced in Rome at 4.30 pm (IST) on Saturday.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma hailed the appointment of Rev. Bernard Laloo as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Shillong.
Taking to his official X handle, Chief Minister Sangma wrote, “Best wishes to Rev. Fr. Bernard Laloo on his appointment as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Shillong Archdiocese by Pope Francis. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and prayers for his new role. May God bless him with wisdom, strength, and guidance as he embarks on this important journey of service to the Church and its faithful.”

Fr. Laloo was born on June 16, 1976, at Laitlyngkot, Meghalaya, and was ordained a priest on April 30, 2006, for the Archdioceses of Shillong.
He served the Archdiocese as Assistant of St. Paul’s Church, Upper Shillong (2006-2007), Administrator of Christ the King College, Shillong (2008), Dean of Studies at St. Paul’s Seminary, Shillong (2009-2015), Principal of Divine Saviour Higher Secondary School, Laitumkhrah (2015-2016), Director of Social Service Centre, Shillong (2017-2021), and board member of Caritas India (2021-2024).
He has been serving as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Shillong and Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians since 2022.
Fr. Laloo was also a former member of the Farmers’ Commission and the State Tuberculosis Co-morbidity Coordination Committee.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s in Sociology as well as a postgraduate diploma in Counselling Psychology.
