Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to restoring peace in the conflict-ridden region, emphasising ongoing efforts to ensure communities live together harmoniously once again.
“The state government is making every possible effort to restore peace and ensure that people can once again live together peacefully, as they did before,” Singh said, addressing the situation that has claimed over 250 lives and displaced thousands since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the DGAR Men & Women Polo Championship 2025, Singh lauded the Army and Assam Rifles for organising various sports events, particularly polo tournaments, which play a vital role in both promoting the sport and safeguarding Manipur’s native ponies.
He urged people to support and cooperate in protecting these iconic animals.

Highlighting the government’s initiatives to protect the state’s ponies, Singh noted that a 30-acre grazing ground has been allocated at Lamphelpat, and additional grazing areas have been developed, including one in Imphal East’s Pangei region.
Singh also announced the launch of the Chief Minister’s Sagol Kangjei Championship, an indigenous polo tournament aimed at preserving and promoting Sagol Kangjei, a traditional Manipur sport known as horseback ball.
He emphasised that modern polo originated from the state and called for continued efforts to celebrate and protect this important cultural heritage.
