NEW DELHI: In a strategic move to address the ongoing Sectarian unrest in Manipur, the Centre is poised to deploy approximately 20-22 fresh Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) companies to the violence-ridden regions of the state. This reinforcement follows the end of duties for the Amarnath Yatra, the local press quoted officials confirming this on Tuesday.
The additional CAPF companies are set to supplement the existing contingent of around 125 units, already stationed in Manipur since the outbreak of violence in early May. These reinforcements encompass personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), forming a robust security grid in the region.
Reports further indicated that approximately 10-15 additional companies, originally assigned to the Amarnath pilgrimage protection duty, could subsequently be relocated to Manipur, reinforcing the government’s commitment to restoring stability to the strife-torn state.
With the temporary suspension of the Yatra from August 23 and the culmination scheduled for August 31, these security forces are being reassigned to bolster the security infrastructure in Manipur.
Meanwhile, in a fresh wave of violence in in the state, a man was found dead and another was severely injured in two separate incidents on Tuesday.
In another incident, unidentified miscreants set fire to abandoned structures in Langol, located within the Imphal West district. At least four houses, one makeshift hut, and a community hall were torched. In response to the incidents of arson, six individuals have been apprehended by the Manipur police for their alleged involvement.
The security forces have intensified search operations across various districts of Manipur and have made significant seizures. A total of seven weapons along with 81 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the operations conducted in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur districts. The situation remains tense as local authorities and security personnel work to restore calm and peace to the affected areas.
