Itanagar: In an effort to reduce accidents caused by Mithuns straying onto highways at night, authorities in Pangin Circle in Arunachal Pradesh’s Siang District have distributed 200 fluorescent collars to Mithun owners.

Niyang Pertin, Circle officer of Pangin, and Okep Dai, executive engineer of Pasighat division (PWD Highways) distributed fluorescent collars to Mithun owners in the presence of Gamtum Padu, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Pangin Sub-Division, and gaon burahs (village heads).

The fluorescent collars were distributed at a formal ceremony held in the Pangin Community Hall, Siang District. This event marked a collaborative effort to reduce road accidents caused by vehicles colliding with Mithuns.

Mithuns, a revered bovine species in Arunachal Pradesh, hold significant cultural and traditional importance for tribal communities throughout the state.

Fluorescent collars were distributed to improve the visibility of the animals on highways during periods of dense fog and low visibility, thereby preventing road accidents.

Acknowledging the socio-cultural significance of Mithuns, Niyang Pertin along with Er. Okep Dai, personally funded and procured 200 fluorescent collars to prevent avoidable accidents and protect these cherished animals.

Mithuns’ dark coats make it challenging for drivers to spot them, often leading to tragic accidents involving both humans and the animals themselves.

“Ensuring the safety of our highways is a shared responsibility. This initiative to protect Mithuns is an important step forward, and it marks just the beginning. We will continue to develop innovative ideas to further enhance the safety and well-being of all,” Gamtum Padu, ADC Pangin, said.

“Witnessing Mithuns fall victim to road accidents time and again was deeply concerning. These animals are an integral part of our cultural heritage, and it was disheartening to witness their vulnerability on highways. It became clear that something needed to be done and I approached Dai sir with the concept to which he immediately supported my initiative recognizing the potential to save lives” said Niyang Pertin.
