Imphal: Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday released the Loktak Water Bird Census Report 2025 and a booklet titled ‘The Water Birds of Loktak Lake’ on the occasion of World Wetlands Day.

The event was organized by the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) under the global theme ‘Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future’ at Sendra Lake Front, Loktak Lake, Bishnupur District.

The book provides insights into the bird diversity of Loktak Lake and the need to preserve its wetland habitats.

Speaking during the event as chief guest, the Governor stated that wetlands are vital not only for supporting diverse flora and fauna but also for sustaining livelihoods and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

He emphasized the importance of community participation and the youth involvement in conservation efforts.

Comparing Loktak to a mother, he said that it is the collective responsibility of the people to protect and care for it.

He stressed the need for collaboration between the government, environmental groups, and local communities to protect Loktak Lake for future generations.

Anurag Bajpai, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, cited deforestation, illegal mining, and rampant poppy cultivation in the catchment and hill areas as major threats to Loktak Lake’s fragile ecosystem.

He stressed the urgent need for coordinated conservation efforts and strict regulatory measures to curb these destructive activities.

Addressing the gathering, Manipur Public Works Department Minister Govindas Konthoujam underscored the need for collective responsibility in conserving Loktak Lake.

He held NHPC accountable for the ecological disruptions caused by the Loktak Hydroelectric Project, asserting that the project has significantly damaged the lake’s ecosystem.

As part of the conservation initiative, the Governor, along with the minister, LDA chairman, and other dignitaries, released fish fingerlings in the lake to replenish the fish population, restore aquatic biodiversity, and support locals dependent on fisheries.
