Shillong: In response to escalating violence and property damage, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, R M Kurbah, announced the imposition of a curfew in Mawkynrew village on Monday.
This decision comes after reports of vandalism and violent incidents at the Ramakrishna Mission School in Mawkynrew, which led to both destruction of property and injuries to individuals.
The official order, issued by District Magistrate Rosetta Mary Kurbah, stated that law and order in the area had significantly deteriorated.
The violence, which occurred in the jurisdiction of the Madanrting Police Station, involved destructive acts at the school, and there were concerns that such disturbances could escalate further.
The situation was feared to potentially lead to severe breaches of peace, risking both life and property in the region.
In the statement, Kurbah mentioned that the activities were likely to continue and worsen, causing serious disturbances to public order.
As a preventive measure, she invoked her authority under Section 163 of the BNSS Act and ordered the curfew to be implemented in the affected area with immediate effect.
The curfew will remain in place until further notice, aiming to restore peace and prevent any further violence in the village.
