A man accused of stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was arrested on Sunday in Thane.
The person was identified as Mohammad Sharif Ul Islam Shehzad, also known as Vijay Das, aged 30. The Bangladeshi national entered India via the West Bengal border six months ago.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the man had entered the actor’s home with the intention of theft, a senior police official.
“He does not have valid Indian documents. There are some seizures that indicate that he is a Bangladeshi national…As of now, we think that the accused has entered the residence (of Saif Ali Khan) for the first time,” police said.
Police further stated, “He came to Mumbai 5-6 months ago. He stayed in Mumbai for a few days and then in the vicinity of Mumbai. The accused used to work in a housekeeping agency.”
The Bollywood star was repeatedly stabbed with a knife by the intruder inside his 12th floor apartment in upscale Bandra early Thursday.
He is currently held at Khar Police Station, police said.
Khan, 54, underwent emergency surgery at the Lilavati Hospital where he was rushed following the incident that took place around 2.30 am at his apartment in `Satguru Sharan’ building. He is recovering and may be discharged soon, doctors said.
