Nagaon: A leopard that had been at the centre of public concern for three consecutive days in Nagaon town was successfully tranquilized and captured by forest officials on Saturday.
The elusive big cat was first sighted on January 1, wandering across various locations in the town, causing widespread alarm among residents.
Its presence was confirmed early Saturday morning when CCTV footage from the Daccapatty market area captured the leopard prowling through the streets.
Alerted by the sighting, concerned locals immediately informed the forest department.
Responding promptly, a specialised team from the forest department swung into action.
The officials deployed tranquilizers to safely subdue the animal before securing it in a protective cage.
The operation was executed efficiently, ensuring the safety of both the leopard and the public.
Following its capture, the leopard underwent a preliminary medical examination to assess its health and condition.

It was then transferred to the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati, where it will receive further care and observation.
Forest officials believe the leopard likely strayed into the town from one of the two nearby forested areas, Bamuni or Chowang, possibly in search of food or due to habitat disturbances.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human-wildlife conflict in regions like Assam, where expanding urban areas and shrinking forest cover often lead to such encounters.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual wildlife sightings to the appropriate departments for swift action.
