Guwahati: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Assam Police seized 11,100 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup worth Rs 2 crore from a vehicle near Damcherra in Assam’s Cachar district on Friday.
Taking to X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the diligent efforts of the police in the anti-narcotics operation.

“Based on credible intelligence, an anti-narcotics operation was conducted by @CacharPolice near Damcherra where a vehicle transporting illegal substances was intercepted,” CM Sarma said.
“Upon thorough search, 11,100 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup valued at Rs 2cr were recovered. Commendable efforts by Assam police,” Sarma said.
A staggering 183 kg of heroin and other drugs, valued at a massive Rs 682.44 crore, were seized by Assam Police in 2024, Chief Minister Sarma announced during a media interaction at the State Guest House, Koinadhara in Guwahati on Wednesday.
“Drug seizures have steadily increased in recent years, with police confiscating narcotics worth Rs 420.17 crore in 2021, Rs 784.55 crore in 2022, Rs 742.09 crore in 2023, and Rs 682.44 crore in 2024,” Sarma stated.

Last year police seized 22,776 kg of ganja, 114 kg of opium, 33.07 lakh psychotropic substance tablets, 14 kg of morphine, and 2.30 lakh cough syrup bottles, he added.
He further said Assam police arrested 5,059 persons and registered 3,287 cases across the state in 2024.
“Assam has seen a significant drop in crime rates in 2024. In 2021, 1,33,239 cases were registered, while this number decreased to 49,966 in 2024. The crime rate per lakh population also declined from 379 in 2021 to 139.2 in 2024. Furthermore, there has been a noticeable reduction in crimes against women and against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes,” the chief minister said.
