Guwahati: Indian weightlifter Martina Devi achieved remarkable success by winning a silver medal in the women’s junior +87kg category at the prestigious Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships, held in Doha on December 25.
The 18-year-old athlete from Manipur demonstrated exceptional strength and skill as she lifted a total of 225kg, comprising 96kg in the snatch and 129kg in the clean and jerk.
This impressive performance earned her second place in a competitive three-lifter field.
Martina’s consistency was evident as she also claimed a silver medal for her clean and jerk effort and a bronze medal for her snatch performance.
Although the results were impressive, they did not match Devi’s personal bests.
Earlier this year, at the Junior World Championships, the talented teenager set new national junior records with a lift of 101kg in the snatch and 136kg in the clean and jerk.
In competitions like the Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships, medals are awarded separately for each lift category — snatch, clean and jerk — as well as for the total combined lift, with the same structure followed in continental, World Cup, and World Championship events.
