Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to the martyrs of the Assam Movement on the occasion of Swahid Diwas, describing it as a day to honour the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of those who laid down their lives for Assam’s identity and cultural preservation.

The Assam Movement, a historic agitation led by indigenous groups, sought the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants in the state.

It marked a significant chapter in the state’s history, defined by mass participation and a commitment to safeguarding Assam’s distinct cultural and demographic identity.

December 10 is observed as Swahid Diwas to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice during this struggle.

Prime Minister Modi took on X (formerly Twitter) to share, “Swahid Diwas is an occasion to remember the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of those who dedicated themselves to the Assam Movement. Their unwavering resolve and selfless efforts helped preserve Assam’s unique culture and identity.”

The prime minister stressed on the bravery and dedication of these martyrs continue to serve as an inspiration.

“Their valour also inspires us all to continue working towards a developed Assam,” he added.

The Assam Movement, which began in 1979 and culminated with the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985, witnessed the loss of numerous lives.

These sacrifices became the foundation of the state’s ongoing efforts to assert its cultural and linguistic heritage.

Swahid Diwas stands as a solemn reminder of the courage displayed by the people of Assam during this tumultuous period.

Leaders across the political spectrum, cultural icons, and citizens alike participate in events held statewide to honour the memory of the martyrs and to reflect on their contributions to Assam’s history.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute underscores the enduring relevance of the movement and its martyrs, serving as a call to action for unity and development while cherishing the unique heritage of Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid a heartfelt tributes to the valiant martyrs of the historic Assam Movement, in an event at Pakamura Ground, Jamugurihat in Assam.

Reflecting on the Assam Movement, which arose to address the issue of foreign infiltration, Sarma highlighted its pivotal role in shaping Assam’s history and described it as an enduring symbol of selfless love and sacrifice, inspiring cultural and social consciousness among the Assamese people.

Recalling the tragic martyrdom of Khargeshwar Talukdar on December 10, 1979, in Bhawanipur, Barpeta, the chief minister noted its significance as a turning point in the movement, which ultimately saw 860 martyrs sacrificing their lives for Assam’s survival and sovereignty.
