Guwahati: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), a conglomerate of eight student bodies from the Northeast, will observe December 11 as a “Black Day” across the Northeastern states to mark its continued opposition against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.
In a statement, NESO chairperson Samuel Jyrwa said, “Despite the relentless opposition of the indigenous peoples of the North East against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, the Government of India did not pay heed and it finally through the Rajya Sabha passed the Dacronian Law which is known as Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019.”
“NESO has declared that December 11 will always be remembered as a Black Day for the whole of the Northeast. In continuation with this, NESO has decided that there will be a display of black flags and black banners in all major places across all the seven states,” Jyrwa said.
He stated that the observation is to give a message to the Centre that that the people of the region are against CAA.
“The observation is to remind our people of yet another political injustice that the Central government perpetrated against the indigenous peoples of the Northeast,” NESO added.
NESO has urged all people of the Northeast to support this observation and continue the fight for a just cause.

The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) comprises of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU).
