In a significant move to support journalists and recognize their contributions to society, the Government of Meghalaya has announced the Meghalaya Journalists Welfare Scheme, 2024.

The scheme, which will come into effect on December 1, 2024, aims to provide financial assistance to working and veteran journalists in need, ensuring their well-being and acknowledging their role in the state’s development.

The welfare fund established under this scheme will offer up to Rs. 5,00,000 to the families of deceased journalists facing extreme hardship.

The assistance will prioritize the spouse, parents, daughters under the age of 21, and sons under 21 years.

Journalists who suffer permanent disabilities that hinder their ability to earn a livelihood can receive up to Rs. 3,00,000, while those battling serious medical conditions such as cancer, renal failure, or heart ailments can also avail financial aid of up to Rs. 3,00,000, provided the expenses are not covered by existing health schemes.

Veteran journalists aged 60 and above, who have served the profession for over 20 years, will be eligible for monthly support of up to Rs. 10,000. However, those receiving pensions from the government are excluded from this benefit.

The scheme will be administered by the Meghalaya Journalists Welfare Committee, chaired by the Principal Secretary or Secretary of the Information and Public Relations (IPR) Department.

Other members include senior officials from the IPR Department, the Directorate of Health Services, and four senior journalists representing key media organizations such as the Shillong Press Club and the Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association.

The committee will meet as required to review and approve applications, ensuring that the scheme operates effectively.

Journalists seeking assistance must be Indian citizens, permanent residents of Meghalaya for at least 10 years, and accredited by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Meghalaya.

Applications will be processed through the DIPR and reviewed by the welfare committee. In urgent cases, the Chairperson has the authority to approve applications immediately, subject to subsequent committee review.

The fund will draw resources from state government grants, contributions from journalists and their organizations, and other stakeholders.

This initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of journalists and ensuring support for those who dedicate their lives to informing the public.
