South West Garo Hills (Meghalaya) recently hosted a singing competition that highlighted the district’s untapped musical talent. The event, themed “For the Youth of Our Generation,” was organized by the District Administration in collaboration with the Tourism Department and took place at the Multi-Facility Centre in Ampati.

The Grand Finale, held on Thursday, featured 21 finalists selected from a rigorous audition process across the district. Among the participants were students who travelled from Tura after their school exams, eager to showcase their vocal skills.

The competition emphasized the importance of providing youth with platforms to explore their talents and gain confidence in their abilities.

Judging the competition were notable figures including celebrated artist Saldorik D Sangma, Johny D Sangma, and Z.D. Sangma, Assistant Research Officer, Planning Branch, Ampati.

The winners included Bilsando Ch Marak, who secured first place, Crossmeda Arengh, who took second, and Praidison D Marak, who claimed third. Special awards were also presented, with the Best Costume award going to the Ampati Achik Cultural Society, and Consolation Prizes to Haijest N Marak and Mima Gorin G Sangma.

Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, who attended the event, presented the prizes and encouraged the youth to seize such opportunities and pursue professional careers in music.

“With platforms like the Cherry Blossom and Me•Gong Festivals, it’s inspiring to see our youth step forward with confidence. Meghalaya, once celebrated as the music capital of the country, can reclaim that title with efforts like this,” she said.

The competition not only provided a stage for emerging talent but also showcased the district’s rich cultural heritage. A large, enthusiastic crowd attended the event, with the audience applauding the participants and organizers alike.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to nurture young talent and offer them avenues to pursue careers in the music industry.

Given the overwhelming success of the event, future programs are already in the works, promising an even brighter future for the voices of South West Garo Hills. The district has firmly established itself as a wellspring of musical potential, poised to shine on larger platforms in the near future.
