Guwahati: The Assam government will take steps for the preservation and development of the Deopahar archaeological site at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.

During a visit to the 11th-century site, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the Golaghat district commissioner to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for appropriate preservation and enhancement of the site.

The site, dating back to the 10th-11th century AD, features exquisitely carved mythological stone sculptures, and a temple showcasing the region’s architectural heritage.

These artifacts highlight the region’s artistic sophistication and provide insights into the spiritual and cultural essence of that era, he said.

The surrounding landscape of Deopahar, nestled among verdant hills and forests, continues to attract those drawn to both its natural beauty and historical significance.

The Chief Minister was accompanied on his visit by agriculture minister Atul Bora, tourism minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, Kaziranga BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and senior officials of the district and state government.

The Deopahar site is situated approximately 60 km from Kaziranga National Park and beyond 250 km from Guwahati.

CM Sarma said, “I frequently visit Kaziranga National Park. However, I haven’t had the opportunity to visit this archaeological site until now. I was informed about this site. I couldn’t fathom that we possessed such an archaeological treasure.”

“Classical language status has recently been accorded to the Assamese language. Evidence of Assamese language usage from the 12th century is present in the artefacts here,” he said.

The chief minister urged people to visit Deopahar and explore its history.

Deopahar, signifying ‘the hill of the God’, represents a paramount ancient heritage in Golaghat district’s Numaligarh. It encompasses 135 hectares, featuring ancient relics, monuments, and Shiva temples alongside ancient sculptures, coins, temples, and diverse brick specimens.
