Guwahati: Assam Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota has issued a stern warning to the contractors responsible for building flyovers in Guwahati, stating that any negligence in maintaining the service lanes adjacent to these flyovers will result in penalties being imposed on the contractors.

Dr Ravi Kota chaired a review meeting on Sunday with the Guwahati Commissioner, PWD (Roads), Kamrup (Metro) district administration, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Guwahati Jal Board, and others.

During the meeting, he directed the PWD to strictly monitor the service lanes for the next four days.

He emphasized that any failure to maintain the service lanes at the flyover construction sites would result in penalties, as per the existing regulations.

The PWD (Roads) has been instructed to ensure that the ongoing construction works at the elevated corridor from Guwahati Club to Bamunimaidam, Cycle Factory junction, and the Downtown Hospital area are carried out in a dust-free manner.

Dr Kota further instructed that the service lanes should be free of potholes, ensuring smooth traffic flow, and should be adequately illuminated.

“All necessary works must be completed by October 9 with a permanent team of engineers assigned to supervise these works. All potholes, including those in the Ulubari flyover area, are to be repaired immediately, and if required, paver blocks should be provided,” he said.

The Guwahati Utilities Company Limited (GUCL) and Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) have to identify and properly illuminate dark spots along key roads, the Chief Secretary added.

The chief secretary said that the installation of as many as 100 CCTVs along the GS Road, equipped with AI and facial recognition tools, is underway.

He also requested the Guwahati Jal Board, Water Board, and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation to ensure uninterrupted services, address water leakages, deploy additional manpower for road repairs, and maintain cleanliness at Puja pandals and ghats.
