Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday held a review meeting with the Garo Hills district administration to assess the destruction caused by the incessant rainfall-induced floods and landslides in the Garo Hills region.

The relentless rainfall since Friday midnight has impacted all five districts, especially South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya.

The heavy rainfall has resulted in flooding in the Dalu area of West Garo Hills. Gasuapara in South Garo Hills has also been severely affected. Tragically, three people have been reported dead in Dalu.

CM Sangma has directed the district administration to release an ex-gratia to the next of the kin of the deceased.

The chief minister has instructed the district administration to request any necessary assistance from the state government and ensure that relief efforts are implemented in the affected areas.

As per reports, a landslide claimed the lives of seven persons at Hatiasia Songma village in South Garo Hills. An NDRF team is carrying out search and rescue operations in the area.

Notably, multiple landslides have caused significant disruptions to road communications between Dalu and Baghmara as well as other areas. The Chief Minister has instructed the administration to identify alternative routes to restore connectivity between Dalu and Baghmara.

He informed that all wooden bridges have been identified in the state, assuring their replacement with modern structures or bailey bridges.

Meanwhile, the chief minister has ordered the immediate reconstruction of washed-away bridges.

The officials have assured the chief minister that electricity will be restored in most parts of the region by Saturday.
