GUWAHATI: The Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM), Europe, a US-based NGO, has requested United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take immediate action to address the atrocities against the Hindu minority population in Bangladesh, particularly in the wake of recent unrest.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the organization stated, “We are writing to you to bring to your urgent attention on the escalation of horrifying violence being perpetrated against the Hindu community in the recent ‘government takeover revolution’ in Bangladesh.”

It further stated that the organization has received numerous distressing reports, videos, and images detailing severe human rights abuses, including violence, destruction of property, arson in the temples, murders and threats to life against Hindus.

HRCBM alleged that for a long time, all the Bangladeshi governments who were in power played the “Hindu trump card” to turn the face of political unrest by orchestrating violence against Hindus and that it has become a matter of common political practice in Bangladesh.

“The recent atrocities represent a blatant disregard for the fundamental human rights enshrined in international law, including the right to freedom of religion, the right to life and security, and the right to live without fear of persecution,” It stated.

The HRCBM has appealed to the international community to take immediate and decisive steps to address the ongoing human rights violations in Bangladesh.

It has called for an independent international investigation under the United Nations into the human rights abuses against Hindus in Bangladesh.

It has asked the UN to exert diplomatic pressure on the Bangladeshi government to take immediate and effective measures to protect its Hindu minority.

Besides, it has also urged for UN humanitarian aid and relief to the victims of these atrocities.

Additionally, the HRCBM also urged for establishing a permanent UN peacekeeping force with a dedicated Minority Protection Rapid Action Police unit to patrol sensitive minority areas in Bangladesh.

Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC0 of the UN.

It is an advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the human rights of people in Bangladesh.
