AIZAWL: Mizoram Police successfully rescued and repatriated three Mizo women who had been working as housemaids in Syria for approximately 20 months.
According to a senior police officer, the three women had left Mizoram in 2022 and began to face hardships soon after they landed in Syria in November of that year.
Following extensive efforts by Mizoram police, Indian embassy officials, and the completion of all necessary legal procedures, the three women reportedly left Syria on August 20 and were safely returned home on Saturday.
Two of the women were from the Hnahthial district, and the other was from the Champhai district.
They were illegally sent to Syria as housemaids by a private placement agency in November, he said.
Soon after they reached Syria on November 6, 2022, the three Mizo housemaids began to face issues from their employers, who challenged them in the Syrian courts, the officer said.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga took the matter very seriously and with their direction initiatives have been taken to rescue and repatriate the three Mizo women from Syria since May, the officer said.
The state government was in constant touch with the Indian embassy and Syrian authorities during the process.

After winning the legal cases, the Indian embassy in Damascus sheltered the women for three weeks. After exit visas were issued, the trio were brought to New Delhi on August 20 and then to Aizawl on August 24.
They will be reunited with their families in their villages within this week.
