GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said the state government will introduce a domicile policy within the next two months, aiming at making only those born in the state eligible for state government jobs.
This announcement was made during an extended session of the Assam BJP’s state executive meeting in Guwahati on Sunday.
The chief minister said the policy aims to protect the rights of indigenous people by reserving state government jobs exclusively for them and barring candidates from other states from getting appointed.
“Govt has recruited over 97,000 people in a transparent manner, since May 2021, creating an ecosystem of building trust in people,” he said.
“Our government is committed to prioritizing indigenous people in the allocation of government jobs,” he added.
He said the government plans to introduce a new law criminalizing ‘Love Jihad’, with penalties including life imprisonment for those convicted.
The Assam chief minister informed that the proposed legislation will be introduced during the upcoming monsoon session of the Assam assembly later this month.
Further, the chief minister also announced measures to regulate land sales between different religious communities.
CM Sarma said, “Earlier, inter-religion land transfers happened freely. We cannot ban land transactions between Hindus and Muslims. But transactions will now require the chief minister’s approval. Land belonging to indigenous and backward communities will no longer be transferable. ”
He stated that a particular community has acquired thousands of hectares of land, but the government will restore this land to the indigenous people.
