GUWAHATI: A total of 200 Indian students, including 39 from Meghalaya, are expected to cross Sonamura in Tripura’s Sepahijala district near the India- Bangladesh border from violence-hit Bangladesh on Saturday.
The Meghalaya government has been working closely with its Tripura counterpart and the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh to ensure the safe return of its citizens.
The Meghalaya government is also in touch with authorities in the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh to ensure safe evacuation of the students.
Sonamura’s Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police will provide refreshments and meals for the arriving Meghalaya students.
Besides, two super deluxe sleeper coaches with security have been arranged at the Sonamura border to ensure the comfort and safety of the students.
Dinner for the students has been coordinated through the DC of Khliehriat at the Government Circuit House in Khliehriat.
As part of the Meghalaya government’s ongoing efforts, separate nodal officers from the Administration and Police have also been appointed to oversee the entire process.
The neighbouring country has been witnessing widespread protests by students against job reservations for the family members of war veterans.
The protesters are demanding an end to the quota for the family members of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971.
At least 105 people have been reportedly killed and scores of others injured since the protest broke out between students and government forces.
