AGARTALA: Tripura successfully conducted its first kidney transplant, marking a significant milestone in state’s healthcare, on Monday.
The intricate six-and-a-half-hour surgery took place at AGMC and GBP Hospital in Agartala, in collaboration with Shija Hospital from Imphal, renowned for its expertise with over 114 kidney transplants to date.
This achievement places Tripura as the third state in the region to accomplish this complex surgical procedure, following Assam and Manipur.
Led by surgeon Dr. Somorendro P., Dr. Mahele, and nephrologist Dr. Guliver, the 13-member surgical team from Manipur worked alongside local doctors including Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Manas Gope, Dr. Mukut Debnath, and Dr. Somoresh Paul.
The team successfully transplanted a kidney from Munna Saha Sutradhar to her 20-year-old son, Subham Sutradhar.
At a press meet following the surgery, GBP Hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Sankar Chakraborty and the medical team celebrated the procedure as a significant achievement for Tripura’s healthcare sector.
They attributed this success to Chief Minister Manik Saha’s vision to establish Tripura as a medical hub.
Under Chief Minister Saha’s initiative, Tripura forged a partnership with Shija Hospital to facilitate the surgery at a nominal cost and provide training to local medical professionals, ensuring they can independently perform such procedures in the future.
Dr. Kanak Chowdhury, Deputy Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital, along with the medical team, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Saha for his dedicated efforts, which they believe were instrumental in achieving this historic medical feat in the state.
Chief Minister Saha personally visited AGMC and GBP Hospital the day before the surgery to inspect the arrangements and met with the medical team, the patient, and the donor to offer his support and encouragement towards advancing healthcare capabilities in Tripura.
