GUWAHATI: As devastating floods continue to grip Assam, claiming lives and disrupting normalcy, Kaziranga National Park reports a grim toll on its wildlife.

According to latest updates, the floodwaters have led to the deaths of 114 wild animals as of Sunday.

Authorities have confirmed that among the casualties, 93 hog deer, six rhinos, and two Sambar deer have drowned.

The authorities are on their toes trying to save as many animals in the park as possible.

So far, efforts by park officials have resulted in the rescue of 95 animals, with several already released back into the wild and others currently undergoing treatment.

Reports indicate that 27 hog deer, one otter, one rhino, one elephant, one jungle cat, and a scoops owl are currently under veterinary care.

A total of 50 animals, including two Sambar deer, 47 hog deer, and one Indian hare, have been treated and successfully released from the park.

Despite ongoing rescue efforts, the flood situation remains critical for wildlife across Eastern Assam Wildlife Division.

Of the 233 camps in the area, including those in Biswanath and Nagaon Wildlife Divisions, 66 remain inundated.

This includes camps under Agratoli, Kaziranga, Bagori, Burhapahar, and Bokakhat ranges, severely affecting operations and rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, in response to the crisis, authorities at park have deployed drones to monitor the movement of wildlife, particularly animals seek higher ground towards the Karbi Hills.

Arun Vignesh, the DFO and Deputy Director of Kaziranga, while speaking to the press on Saturday, said that the park has been using hand boats to locate and rescue stranded or deceased animals.

Vignesh reassured that measures are in place to minimise disturbance to animals seeking refuge in the Karbi Hills.

Despite a gradual decline in floodwaters, concerns persist for the welfare of wildlife in Kaziranga as the situation unfolds.

Efforts continue as park officials and wildlife experts strive to mitigate the impact of the floods and ensure the safety and preservation of the region’s diverse wildlife amidst challenging conditions.
