SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) national president, Conrad Sangma, extended his congratulations to the victorious candidates from Congress and Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) for their resounding wins in the Tura and Shillong Lok Sabha seats, respectively.

In a social media post, Chief Minister Sangma acknowledged the electoral outcomes, stating, “We humbly accept and respect the mandate of the people and wish Mr. Saleng A. Sangma and Mr. Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon the very best.”

The Tura seat, traditionally an NPP bastion, was claimed by Congress’ Saleng.

He defeated the incumbent NPP MP Agatha Sangma by a significant margin of over 1.5 lakh votes, marking a significant shift in voter sentiment in the region.

In Shillong, VPP’s Syngkon emerged victorious, unseating three-term Congress MP Vincent H. Pala with an impressive lead of 3,70,899 votes.

NPP’s candidate, current Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, finished in the third place.

While the counting was still on, Syngkon expressed his gratitude and optimism to the press on Tuesday morning, saying, “We believe in hard work and have shared with the people the party’s vision and principles. We are confident that the people of Shillong will support us. The early trends indicating our lead are a manifestation of the positive outcomes to come.”

Following VPP’s remarkable victory, party chief Ardent Basaiawmoit announced that the VPP would now focus on addressing corruption at the national level.

Basaiawmoit highlighted ongoing issues of corruption within Meghalaya that have not been adequately investigated by central agencies such as the CBI and ED.

This election result represents a significant shift in Meghalaya’s political landscape, with both Congress and VPP securing crucial victories over the NPP in key constituencies.
