GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of intensified thunderstorms and rainfall activity over Assam from May 26 to 27, owing to a developing weather system in the Bay of Bengal.
As per the latest forecast, a low-pressure area over the West central and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal is anticipated to escalate into a depression over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal on Friday.
Subsequently, it is expected to further intensify into Cyclone Remal, which is expected to develop over the east-central Bay of Bengal, and is likely to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts around Sunday.
This weather system is predicted to bring widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Assam and several states of the Northeast.
On May 26, light to moderate rainfall is expected for most places in Assam.
However, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in Goalpara, Bongaigaon, and Dima Hasao districts, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely in several other districts.
Similar weather conditions are anticipated to persist on May 27, with light to moderate rainfall across most of the state.
Dima Hasao, Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Darrang, Udalguri, and other districts may encounter heavy rainfall.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to affect isolated places across the state.
In a social media post, the IMD confirmed the progression of the weather system, highlighting its likelihood to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts around May 26 midnight.
Residents and authorities are urged to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and to take appropriate precautions to minimize any potential risks posed by adverse weather conditions.
