ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh’s Kabak Yano etched her name in history books by becoming the fifth women from the state to scale Mt Everest, the world’s highest peat at 8,848.86 meters.
Yano reportedly reached the summit at 11:50 am on Tuesday, alongside fellow climbers Babu Sherpa, Ngima Dorjee Sherpa, Subash Rai, Lakpa Nurbu Sherpa, and Shere Sherpa from Nepal.
With this climb, she becomes the first woman from the Nyishi community and the youngest female from the Northeast to successfully summit Mount Everest.
A native of Kamle district, Yano’s climb was confirmed by Peak Promotion, a government-recognised leading trekking and mountaineering agency in Nepal.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein was quick to take to social media to acknowledge the feat and congratulate Yano.
Praising her remarkable achievement, he wrote on his official handle, “…I salute her unwavering dedication and passion that have led her to conquer the world’s highest peak, standing at 8,848.86 meters…,” he wrote.
Yano’s journey to the top of Everest is supported by her extensive mountaineering training.
She has completed the Basic Mountaineering Course from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling, apart from the Advanced Mountaineering Course and the Search and Rescue Course from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang.
Beyond her mountaineering achievements, Yano is also known a dedicated sportswoman.
She previously represented Arunachal Pradesh as a state-level cricket player and is an alumna of Rashtriya Raksha University in Pasighat.
Yano’s ascent has not only showcased Arunachal’s mountaineering spirit but also underscores a significant milestone for the nation, signifying the growing involvement and triumphs of Indian women in mountaineering.
Yano and her team are currently descending from the summit.
