SHILLONG: Garo filmmaker Dominic Sangma’s latest endeavour, Rapture, has made waves once again.

Following his selection for La Fabrique Cinéma at the 2019 Festival de Cannes, Sangma’s second feature film has now hit screens in over 100 theatres across France.

The announcement of the film’s release was made on Wednesday by its producers, Capricci Cinema and Anna Films Shillong.

Described as a critically acclaimed piece, Rapture has garnered attention globally for its powerful storytelling and captivating cinematography.

“Rapture has captivated audiences worldwide with its poignant storytelling and striking cinematography, delving into the deep cultural and spiritual realms of the Garo community. Sangma’s direction brings a unique and authentic voice to the forefront of world cinema. The extensive release in France is a testament to the universal appeal and artistic excellence of his work,” stated the producers in a statement.

The film has also earned a label from GNCR (Groupement National des Cinémas de Recherche), a collective of art house exhibitors, which is a significant recognition facilitating greater distribution and visibility.

This marks the first instance where a film from Meghalaya has achieved such widespread distribution in French cinemas.

Rapture, Sangma’s second feature film, unfolds its narrative in Nongthymmai, a village nestled in the Garo hills of Meghalaya.

As local residents vanish and rumours of organ trafficking surface, fear grips the Garo community.

Amplifying this anxiety is a local pastor’s warning of an impending apocalyptic darkness lasting eighty days.

Seen primarily through the eyes of its ten-year-old protagonist, Kasan, who grapples with night blindness, Rapture delves into the consequences of fear-induced violence within a community.
