Union Minister Sarbananda en route to Iran; crucial Chabahar Port agreement in offing

India is poised to sign a major agreement that will enable it to carve out a new trade corridor between South Asia and Central Asia via Iran.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal departed for Iran on Monday via chartered flight to finalize a long-term lease agreement for the strategically positioned Chabahar port along the Gulf of Oman coast.

The agreement holds significance as it will avoid traditional transit points such as Karachi and Gwadar ports in Pakistan.

The implications of this agreement extend beyond mere trade routes.

By offering an alternative transit route, bypassing the congested Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, this route will mitigate logistical challenges and bolstering regional trade dynamics.

The impending contract for Chabahar Port Operations marks yet another milestone in India’s expanding maritime footprint within the region.

Notably, it follows the inauguration of the Sittwe Port in Myanmar by Sarbananda Sonowal exactly a year ago, in May 2023.

These developments underscore India’s concerted efforts to counterbalance the burgeoning Chinese presence in the region.

Chabahar port holds immense significance in India’s connectivity endeavours, serving as a key port in its regional engagement strategy.

It serves as a pivotal junction facilitating trade between India, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia.

India’s principal vision is to position Chabahar Port as a pivotal transit hub under the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), aimed at streamlining cargo movement between India and Central Asia.

The INSTC, a multi-modal transportation route, spans from the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea via Iran, eventually extending to northern Europe via St. Petersburg in Russia.

It envisions a seamless flow of goods, commencing from Mumbai to the Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar, further progressing through Bandar-e-Anzali in Iran to Astrakhan in Russia, and finally dispersing into Europe via Russian railways.

Earlier discussions between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in January had underscored the urgency of expediting the implementation of bilateral agreements, including the Chabahar Port Development Plan.
